History of Hot Air Balloon

The first Hot air balloon was launched by the French Montgolfier Brothers in September 1783 with an unmanned flight lasting 10 minutes.  In the same year, a tethered flight carrying humans on board was done by Jean Francois Pilarte de Rozier making a hot air balloon the first human carrying aircraft ever made.

Modern hot air balloons with a heat source on board were developed later in the 1950s by Ed Yost who was able to successful fly a hot air balloon 1960. His studies hence formed the foundation of modern hot air balloons.

How does a Hot Air Balloon work?

A hot air balloon is an aircraft that consists of an envelope containing heated air. The aircraft also has a wicker basket which is used as a carrier for passengers and heat source.

A burning flame is used to heat the air inside the balloon making it less dense hence lighter than the surrounding air outside the balloon. This makes the balloon buoyant and it is then able to float in the air. The balloon envelope is made from fabric such as ripstop nylon and dacron. The part closest to the burner is made of fire resistant material such as Nomex.

The heat source is mounted at the center of the envelope above the basket, injecting the flame into the envelope and heating the air within. The burner uses fuel such as propane or liquefied gas that is stored in pressure vessels.

The basket is made from woven wicker or rattan since these materials are light and strong enough to safely carry passengers during the flight.

●        The Dubai hot air balloon tour starts with pick up at 4:30 am. You will then head to the flying location at the Margham Desert Area along the Dubai – Al Ain Road.  You will board a hot air balloon on a sharing basis with a maximum of 20 passengers.

●        During the hot air balloon tour, you will rise up to 4000 feet in the air to catch the majestic desert sunrise along with a breathtaking view of the spanning golden desert sand dunes below.
